    I imagine there is a lot to it! But I am unfamiliar with Cryptocurrency algorithms.

    Decred uses the hashing Blake 256 algorithm with 14 rounds. You can read a fair bit of detail on wikipedia by searching for "Blake hash function". If you wish to mine it, you can use GPUs or FPGAs. The miner itself will be released closer to the launch date (ETA countdown on website main page).
