How To Know If A Gpu Is Descent For Mining?

    Hey all,

    I was wondering how you could see if a GPU is descent for mining?
    I figured some of us (including me) dont have the money to spend on multiple R9 290 cards.
    So in my case i searched the internet for some used Gpu's (bought 2 HD6950 because they did perform pretty ok with srypt mining) For decred they didnt work so good tho.

    My question really, What are the speccs you need to look at to know if a card is descent for mining decred?
    For example the HD 6950 has 2GB, 800Mhz Core, 1250Mhz Mem.

    His cheaper brother (the HD6870) has only 1GB, but has 900Mhz core and 1050Mhz Mem.

    Which one is better? Get my point? :)

    I know..
    But i mean in general. I dont want to know the exact hashrate of a card. I ment what is important for a gpu to mine decred? High coreclock, memclock, shaders etc.

    Im not sure mate, I dont do PoW mining. prob best to ask in that forum link above where the PoW community experts are posting.

    Most important thing is hash per watt & your electricity rates. Everything else comes after that.

    The true factor of consideration is the amount of Stream processors (for ATI-based) and CUDA processors (nVidia-based). They are also other factors such as 32bits integrer handling that makes ATI-based cards so efficient at mining but as a rule of thumb: the more cores you got, the fastest your hashrate will be.

    A 290x has 2816 cores, same as a 390x. An R9 Fury has 4096, R9 Fury X2 has 8192.

    update: HD 6950 = 1408 cores, HD 6870 = 1120 cores

    btw, @sw1 , I like this nickname. Probably only a few of us understand the electronic meaning of it ;) Ah, the old orcad days... :D
