So, I just posted this thread in Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/decred/comments/6nwnf9/i_need_help_restoring_my_wallet/). I'm sorry if this is kind of flooding, but I'm desperate here. So, a few days ago I started having problems with my computer. All my DCR were in this computer. I wasn't able to transfer them to my Poloniex account. So what I tried to do was to download an iOS Decred Wallet. This one. I entered my seed phrase hoping that it would load my wallet and I would be able to keep my coins safe. But the app said that my phrase was invalid. Today my computer passed away. I just bought a new one and the first thing I did was to download Decrediton wallet and see if I my coins were still... well... mine. I entered the seed phrase, checked, recheck it and clicked create wallet. Decrediton then asked me to enter the Private Passphrase. I did. It all seemed to work, because I got no errors. The app started normally, but my balance was zero. Now I went back to the iOS app and saw the reviews: three people claiming that the app doesn't work. I think I was a victim of a scam wallet... If the app developer got my Seed Phrase and stole my coins, would Decrediton know? Would it show that under Recent Transactions? I feel such an idiot. Also, can I recover a wallet with a seed phrase using dcrwallet on command line? I'd like to try that. Sorry for the duplicate thread (here and on Reddit). Our community is small and I am kind of freaking out here. Any help will be really appreciated.
First, there are no official iOS wallets, so it's 3rd party. I haven't heard of any coin thefts from people useing them, but I don't believe they work since you need to run a full node. Now, if you just installed Decrediton and checked your balance, it's possible that it hadn't finished downloading the chain, so your balance will show as 0. Give it a couple of hours (I think it's about an hour to get the full chain). If there has been any funny business, then yes, you will see the transactions in Decrediton. If your funds are there, consider your seed compromised since you've given it to an unknown 3rd party. Create a new wallet ASAP and move them out of the old one. You can use dcrwallet if you want, the seed will work there.
@Shadowlance Thanks for your reply! I tried to edit my post twice, but I got a message saying that I was posting something spammy Here are the edits: edit: I just installed and ran dcrwallet CLI. I could access my wallet and my balance is fine. But still: why can't I get my balance on Decrediton? edit 2: Now my balance appears perfectly on Decrediton. Maybe I just wasn't patient enough to wait for the app to scan the blockchain? You know that feeling of when your girlfriend's period is late? That was what I felt for my DCR. I'm so confused. Now I feel even more an idiot. Thanks for the advice. I'll create a new wallet right now.
Yeah, it would have been scanning the chain still, or maybe the display hadn't updated. At any rate, glad everything is ok.
Definitely a good idea to make a new wallet and transfer funds there. That way you know that there is no risk. That is the reason why losing control of a seed is so dangerous, the other party can go and transfer the funds later and you have no way of knowing ahead of time. It sounds like that wallet probably isn't trying to steal seeds, but still better to be safe than sorry.
