I downloaded the software provided, thinking I needed to do that in order to build a wallet. I opened dcrd.exe. and all of a sudden the stuff pictured started erupting on the screen. Am I freaking mining?
And I can't get the wallet to work. I thought up 33 great words, but they are not being accepted.
I might be beyond help, but my spirit is still willing. Please let me know: A: what I am doing related to the screen shot, and B: what I should do to find acceptable seed words. And what is a "hex" anyway??

Thank you for your infinite patience and good will. 2016-02-27.png

dcrd is the program which downloads the blockchain for you. This screen shows you what it's doing. You aren't mining, that's normally done with a separate program which talks to the dcrd program.

The 33 words the wallet is talking about are for if you want to restore a wallet you already generated (for example, if you did the airdrop, or if you want to recreate a wallet.) If you are making a wallet for the first time, then let the program generate them for you! They are from a predefined list of words. Run the wallet with --create, and say "no" when it asks if you already have 33 word seed. It will then display a set of words it has generated. WRITE THIS DOWN, as you cannot recover your wallet without it in the event you lose your wallet.dat.

Also, NEVER share your 33 word seed with anyone, or the hex value equivalent. They can steal your wallet if you do.

    Hope this helps! :)

Oh wow! Illumination!! That really helps with the wallet thing, knowing that the program generates the seed words. And from reading the Forum as much as I do, it has been definitely drummed into my head to WRITE THOSE WORDS DOWN AND DO NOT LOSE THEM!! (Though if I ever do lose them, I know who to call for help with opening my wallet: Blizzy (or not) )

Can the wallet, once made, be taken offline? Or can you make another one for offline? I found instructions for a Bitcoin offlline one, but I'm worried that my ignorance will lead me into trouble if I try to make one.

    Anyway, thanks for the help.

Is the "hex" thing that I've seen mentioned something that I need to do as well?

If you just want to create an address with the wallet, you can just leave it offline. It only has to be online to monitor transactions and get it's balance, send funds etc.

The "hex" thing is just what the 33 words are turned into, so apple dog becomes something like f34e. The hex code is the "real" wallet seed, the 33 words are just a more human reliable way to write them down and re-enter them, as you can tell if you made a mistake that way! You don't need to record the hex as well as the 33 words, but doing so won't hurt.

You have made this so understandable! Thank you so much. I'm off to make me a wallet. :)

Well, I've run into a couple of problems. When I attempt to open the wallet file I downloaded, it displays in a format unintelligible to me. I tried all of the options, and none of them displayed anything I could read. When I went back online to start that wallet, it only asked me for a seed. It did not ask if I had one, and if not, come up with one for me.
I would really appreciate some more clarifying answers. Thanks.
