@Xi195 Nothing is stopping anyone from marketing Decred-based software to the public with the word "Dcred" or "credz" or "credits". If you feel that strongly about Dcred, you should go build a wallet called literally "Dcred" and market it to the public. I'm pretty sure we're doing investor relations in this thread, it's just that people haven't realized it. There's not one end user of a Decred software application who cares about this. Personally, I was attracted to Decred due to its distinctive name. Decred's branding team is absolutely crushing it right now.
Very nice and constructive post, @Xi195. Just curious: if you saw dCred, DCred, Dcreds, etc., is there one (or more) you think would have attracted you faster than DeCRED, deCRED, or Decred?
I like dCred. It's like "iPhone" vs phone. or "ePlug" vs plug. It reminds me of Zcash. However, I took a look at https://redecentralized.github.io/alternative-internet, which is fairly representative of similarly spirited decentralized projects, and the use of a leading bare 'd' is only found in the Ethereum ecosystem when related to the word "dApp" as in DAppStore. "dCred" looks stronger than "dApp" to my eyes, but then I never thought dApp was very strong at all. Is 'd' really as distinctive as the 'i' in iPhone? I think not. Anyone is free to market "dCred" to the public. Imagine we split test a landing page of dCred vs Decred, and find out dCred elicits a stronger response. Is that reason enough to rebrand the entire project? Why, when the advertising of dCred can be done by anyone with the desire to do so?
In my opinion the best path forward would be dCRED. This negates the "rebrand" arguments mentioned above since removing one letter is hardly a rebrand. I also think this spelling most clearly emphasizes the intended "decentralized credits".
I love that people are interested and engaged, but as far as I can tell, no one who has been contributing to the code, docs, or design has expressed any interest in a name change at this point so I wouldn't get too excited talking about this (and as I stated above, I think a name change is a terrible idea).
My excitement lies primarily in the fact, as you mentioned, that people are interested and engaged. I'm also partial to the current name and see the overwhelming majority vote shares that view. I also see the subsequent statement a potential indication that interest by code, doc, and design devs may be viewed as more influential or important than the community outside those roles/stakeholders. As a project moving toward proper decentralization, I hope the code, doc, and design devs are objective and receptive to constructive influence of the community not holding those roles per se.
I probably should have added 'community builders' (or building, or something like that) to my list (but in my defense it was very early in my time zone when I wrote that). But I think the rest of what I said stands with that addition.
I agree 100% and was going to say the same thing but you beat me to it. This is why I inquired how the proposal process will work in another thread. What's the difference? The people who hold Decred and participate in PoS, regardless of their commitment to the community, are the ones who, from my understanding, have the most input on the issues and their outcomes. I understand that the framework for deciding on issues is in place - but that still leaves a major hole in the framework for deciding on what issues will be decided on. I am just trying to think of the bigger picture here. PoS voting doesn't mean anything if there is still a central power that controls the issues that will be voted on. (Sounds familiar, doesn't it USA?)
The plan in the future is to have a proposal system for these types of things. We already have a very good idea of how it will all work and it will be something worked on later this year, per the roadmap.
Hope I'm not intruding by bumping this thread but while i have highly rated decred for ages and i got the first air drop so I'm exceedingly chuffed to log on and find I've got £28,000+ worth of decred in a wallet. But.. I'm not a fan of the name, stuff that begins with D don't do that well. Stuff that begins with B tend to grow exponentially, like Birch trees an Bit-coin It's really strange how names can instantly bestow an understanding to the observer, english language was founded and honed while the only alphabet was the nordic and germanic runes, which eventually became the old english fultharc, all the letters had meanings, most of our core words where created with that in mind and now we still all retain its sociological impact on our subconscious minds. So naturally i thought SacredV because S is successful sunlight stuff and V is for vote. Which is what you seem to mine, and sacred implies integrity, which is what you seem to have and should probably also mine. An absolute ton of work I'm sure, don't expect it'll seem worth it to you diligent determined lot. I've got fresh eye's an i'm very pleased to make your acquaintance.
