So, to my understanding no one owns the Bitcoin network. Why cant Decred just change their name to BITCOIN as we are clearly better and lets take all the market share. !!

    Whatever I want.
Because Decred is not Bitcoin. As much weight as names are given, calling something what it isn't doesn't actually change anything and probably just makes you look dumb. If Decred tried to annex the Bitcoin identity, it would create confusion among new adopters and alienate almost all existing Bitcoin fans. Neither of these is a good strategy for promoting a relative newcomer to the party.

Yeah, confusion is definitely not something we would want.

And besides, we spent a lot of time coming up with the decred name :)

I started to really enjoy the name Decred when I discovered that it stands for "decentralized credit". Even the name is full of sense. Bitcoin sounds cool too, but all we get from "bit coin" is "digital money".

It took me a while to notice this decoding of Decred. It is present on decred.org in the browser tab title, but of course is cropped. It shows under the logo, but only if you guess to hover your mouse over the logo.

I hadn't noticed this before! I don't see any reason why a user would hover their mouse over the logo there, I expect most people who see this have just rolled over it randomly.

I believe @linnutee designed the website, perhaps he could comment on this.

I didn't even know that we had that little onhover thing on the webpage. But I already knew what the name meant :)

It's an easter egg + minor tip on the name clarification.
